VANCOUVER, BC (AP) -- Many of the competitions on Day 12 of the Winter Olympics are for medals.
But at least one non-medal event promises to be just as exciting. The men's hockey quarterfinals get underway today.
The United States is taking on Switzerland (3 p.m. Eastern time). Then Russia and Canada face off in a game many thought would be the gold medal game, not a quarterfinal.
The U.S. beat the Swiss 3-1 in the Olympic opener a week ago, but elimination is on the line this time.
In the women's giant slalom, Americans Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso will each try for a third medal at Vancouver. Mancuso is still chasing gold in these games, but she's the defending champ in the giant slalom. She won at Turin in 2006.
Medals will also be handed out in women's bobsled, two women's speedskating events, women's freestyle aerials and the men's 40-kilometer relay in cross-country skiing.
