Niko Tamurian is Sports Director for CNY Central.
The Skaneateles girls volleyball team won a Section III championship last weekend, something that coach Doreen Doctor says would not have been possible without seniors Destin Van Tyle and Alexa Campanile. Coach Doctor praises the duo, this week's CNY Central Athletes, because they're not playing positions that give them the most kills, or the most recognition in the box scores, but they are players that do the "grunt work" Coach says and the team would be lost without them.
For Destin and Alexa, their senior season has been what they've always dreamed of, accomplishing the goal set way back in the fall: to win a sectional championship. The unique circumstance for girls winter volleyball is that there's no actual state championship game, so when Skaneateles plays for a regional title at Jamesville-DeWitt on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. that will, in essence, be the Lakers’ State championship game.
According to Destin and Alexa's teammates and coaches, there's no better way to send out this selfless, hard working tandem that spiked Lakers Volleyball to new heights.
Congratulations to Destin Van Tyle and Alexa Camponile, this week's Dunkin' Donuts CNY Central Athletes!
