ADAMS, JEFFERSON CO. -- Maddy Wetterhahn is a terrific cello player and was almost always at the top of her class academically, but basketball was a brand new challenge for her in her freshman year. But currently as a junior, Wetterhahn is not only one of the leaders on South Jefferson, she's also this week's Dunkin' Donuts CNY Central Athlete.
South Jefferson girls head coach Pat Bassett admits jokingly that Wetterhahn "couldn't walk and chew gum a couple years ago", but she's worked hard and turned that around on the hardwood, averaging more than 12 points a game.
While she and the coach admit there are a number of different leaders on the team, Maddy is described as the kind one, the one who'll stay to pick up basketballs after practice and who'll do everything in her power pick up a teammate if they have a tough day. Maddy admits, however, that any one of her teammates would probably do the same for her. This is a major reason why South Jefferson won the Section III Class B title this past weekend. They'll play Oneonta in the State regionals this Saturday.
