DEWITT -- The Jamesville-DeWitt boys' lacrosse team is still perfect after Thursday’s win over Irondequoit, but more importantly they’re headed to Stony Brook to take on Garden City in the Class B state championship game on Saturday.
The Red Rams were being mauled by the Irondequoit defense early on, going down 3-0 to start the game. But a Joe Sheppard goal in the second quarter broke the J-D goose egg, and a Peter Goss goal less than a minute later proved the floodgates were open. The second half of the game was all J-D defensively and offensively, as the Red Rams went on to win the semifinal 9-5.
"You always get nervous, you get down", said J-D Head Coach Jamie Archer, “and it's a different position than we've been in all year, but the kids have shown us all year they have a lot of heart.”
“We thought maybe they were going to catch us on our off day,” said J-D attackman Eric Dejohn, “but once we scored the first goal we got our momentum and kept it going.”
In the nightcap, it was Fairport knocking off Section IV's Ithaca, advancing to the Class A state championship game. Ithaca defeated West Genesee earlier in the week for the second straight year.
The Class B state final is scheduled for Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
