Places 3rd in DIRTCAR Race
Stewart goes over his car with his team before the big race.
WEEDSPORT -- You could hear the excitement in his voice when a race official from Weedsport Speedway called the sports office at CNY Central and said Tony Stewart would be racing there Sunday night. His stop in town was not expected, completely out of the blue.
Some NASCAR drivers have been known to make the occasional stop at local DIRT races like Kasey Kahne in Oswego in 2009, but that was the week preceding the Watkins Glen race. Seeing Tony Stewart at the Cayuga Country Fairgrounds was absolutely a thrill for all. It was all part of the Wings and Warriors Night with the ESS Sprint Car Series at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Stewart owns a car that regularly races in the circuit (driven by Jessica Zemkin) but decided to take his own DIRT car for a spin in Central New York on Sunday night.
From the moment he was introduced before his first heat run, the crowd erupted. Stewart, driving the Old Spice #14 car with the same logos you'll see on his car during NASCAR races placed third at the event. Zemkin won the race, while Jason Barney finished second.
Stewart declined to be interviewed by CNY Central because he was "on vacation". You can't blame the guy too much for not wanting to talk, especially since on a night like Sunday he was able to go back to his roots without the pressure and lights of the world stage and just have some fun on the dirt oval in Weedsport.
Truly a one night vacation for one of the best racers in the nation.
