JAMESTOWN, NY -- The Auburn Doubledays started their five-game homestand with a 8-7 win over the Jamestown Jammers tonight at Diethrick Park.
Three straight singles and a stolen base produced the go-ahead run for the Doubledays in the top of the eighth inning. After Gustavo Pierre reached on a one-out single, he promptly stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Wilfredo Gimenez. Jonathan Jones brought him home with his third single of the game, giving the D-Days a 8-7 lead.
The Jammers had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Jammers racked up six hits in the frame against Auburn starter, Drew Hutchison. Hutchison went 4.2 innings, allowed seven hits, and gave up four runs. After allowing Danny Blacks single in the second, Hutchison retired ten straight Jammers batters. Ryan Fishers single in the fifth snapped the run and ended Hutchisons night.
Travis Garrett pitched in relief of Hutchison. He faced nine batters, allowed two singles, and one unearned run. He was pulled in the seventh inning in place of right-hander Shawn Griffith. Dayton Marze retired all four batters he faced to nail down his second save.
The Doubledays busted out offensively with a four-run third inning. The D-Days cashed in one two walks from Jammers starter Rett Varner and a throwing error from second basemen Danny Black. The rally was capped by Jack Murphys two-run double to deep right centerfield. Murphys hit plated Marcus Knecht and Lance Durham.
Auburn took a 5-4 lead on a fielding error by second basemen Danny Black. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Carlos Perez chopped a 2-2 pitch to second base. Black charged, but the ball kicked off his glove for his second error of the game. Matt Nuzzo scored on the play. The Doubledays added two more runs in the sixth inning an run-scoring single by Jonathan Jones and a two-out RBI double from Carlos Perez.
Jamestown had come back from a 7-4 deficit with a three-run seventh inning. After Ryan Fisher reached on a fielding error by first basemen Lance Durham, Shawn Griffith was called in from the bullpen to close out the inning. The first batter he faced, Marcell Ozuna, ripped a 1-0 pitch over the batters eye in dead centerfield for a two-run, game-tying homerun.
The Doubledays (13-19) will be back in action tomorrow night against the Jammers to close out their two-game series. Daniel Webb will start for Auburn and Josh Hodges will get the ball for the Jammers.
