INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Indianapolis Indians by a score of 4-2 on Sunday evening in front of 7,584 at Victory Field. Leonard Davis knocked in three of the four Chiefs runs. Jordan Zimmermann pitched five innings surrendering one run in his third start for Syracuse this season.
For the third straight time in the series, Syracuse (63-59) found itself coming from behind against the Indians. Alex Presley knocked in the first run of the ballgame on a triple to right field to score Akinori Iwamura in the bottom half of the third inning. That was the only run Zimmermann allowed.
The righthander gave up that run, six hits, walked one and struck out three.
Jeff Mandel relieved him in the sixth and gave up a run when Jason Jarmillo grounded into a double play. It was 2-0 in favor of Indianapolis after six innings.
In the seventh, Leonard Davis doubled home Jason Botts to make it 2-1 Indianapolis (62-61). The next batter, Michael Martinez, singled up the middle to score Davis and tie the game at two.
Davis struck again in the eighth with a bases loaded single to score Botts and catcher Wilson Ramos to put the Chiefs ahead for good at 4-2. It was the first three RBI game for Davis since June 13th against Charlotte and just his second of the year with the Chiefs.
Atahualpa Severino and Adam Carr combined to pitch a scoreless ninth against the Indians and Carr earned his fourth save in five tries.
The Chiefs and Indians will play again on Monday evening. Righty Erik Arnesen (4-7, 3.82) is scheduled to start for Syracuse. Indianapolis has not yet named their starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
