SYRACUSE -- Syracuse University junior forward Heather Susek recorded one goal and two assists and senior forward Kristin Girouard registered one goal and one assist as the eighth-ranked Orange field hockey team defeated Northeastern, 4-1, today at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Senior forward Shelby Schraden and sophomore back Amy Kee scored SU’s other two goals, while junior All-American Martina Loncarica and senior back Maggie Befort each added an assist in the victory.

Girouard created Syracuse’s first scoring opportunity at the 7:26 mark of the first half. The Oak Hill, Va. native dribbled in from the right side and sent a pass to Susek, who then fed Schraden.

Susek gave the Orange a 2-0 advantage two minutes later. Once again Girouard created the opportunity, firing a shot on cage, gathering the rebound and sending the ball to Susek for the goal.

Northeastern’s Anne-Rieke Stuhlmann scored at 20:26 to cut the margin to 2-1.

Girouard and SU responded before halftime, converting on Syracuse’s fourth penalty corner of the contest. The senior was able to get her stick on a ball sent to the front of the cage by Susek.

Kee, Loncarica and Befort converted a traditional corner for SU’s fourth and final tally of the game with 2:13 remaining.

The Orange outshot the Huskies, 17-7, and recorded nine penalty corners to their five. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver tallied four saves for the ‘Cuse.

Syracuse begins a six-game road trip on Friday, September 3 at No. 17 Ohio State at 3 p.m.
