HOMER -- In Friday's girls soccer Class B state semifinal game, the Marcellus Mustangs scored two late goals to edge Center Moriches 2-1 at Homer High School.
Center Moriches, from Long Island, scored early and held onto a 1-0 lead for most of the game. With seven minutes to play, however, junior Kathryn Busa tied things up by freezing the opposing goalie on a breakaway. Busa wasn't done though - with just over three minutes to play she launched a high arching shot that just went over the goalie's outstretched arms for the win.
Busa instantly put her hands above her head yelling "I can't believe it!" Her emotions were hardly tempered after the game.
"I was just in shock!" said Busa. "After the second goal I had to come out of the game cause like the adrenaline wore off, just oh my gosh this is crazy!"
Marcellus advances to play for a New York State Championship Saturday morning, taking on the winner of Greece-Odyessy vs. Bronxville at 9:00 a.m. on the campus of SUNY Cortland.
