Cortland players and fans celebrate the big win.
Something had to give when 12-1 Cortland hosted the powerhouse that is 11-2 Jamesville-Dewitt, and what gave was Jamesville-Dewitt's win streak against Section III teams. The Purple Tigers took a 3-point halftime lead over the Red Rams, and while J-D made a rally and took the lead briefly, Cortland was able to weather the storm for a 55-51 victory. Cortland came into the game with a plan to limit DaJuan Coleman and Tyler Cavanaugh's production, and as evidenced by Coleman only scoring 14 points, the plan worked. Pete Drescher scored 14 for J-D as well, but Cortland was paced by Brandon Hogan and J.P. Reagan in the victory. Cortland led 53-51 late, when J-D earned a timely steal, but after a missed shot, Coleman was called for a loose ball foul, and Cortland converted the two free throws that ensued. J-D trailed by four, and couldn't convert at the other end, and the Cortland student section poured onto the floor to celebrate the victory. Cortland now assumes first place in the Freedom Division.
Just north on I-81, another Freedom Division game was held at Homer with the Trojans hosting CBA. It was close early with CBA leading just 14-9 late in the first. But a 5-0 spurt to end the first quarter turned into a 17-0 run stretching into the 2nd quarter as the Brothers won easily 68-24.
