Syracuse University's John Galloway is one of 10 finalists for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for men’s lacrosse. Finalists were selected from a list of 20 candidates based on personal qualities that define a complete student- athlete. While on-the-field performance thus far during the college lacrosse season was a factor in determining the finalists, the criteria also includes a high emphasis on classroom, character and community service.

In addition to Galloway, the other finalists are: Stefan Bauer (Lafayette), Grant Catalino (Maryland), Kevin Crowley (Stony Brook), Johnathan Falcone (Yale), Ryan Flanagan (North Carolina), Anthony Iannello (Bryant), Brian Karalunas (Villanova), Tom Montelli (Duke) and Jonathan Stumpf (Lehigh).

Nationwide voting begins immediately and concludes on May 10. Fan balloting will be combined with votes from coaches and media to determine the winner, who will receive the award during the NCAA Championships in Baltimore. The link to vote is: www.seniorclassaward.com/vote/lacrosse_2011/

A 2011 team captain, Galloway is a public relations major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. He owns a 3.56 cumulative GPA and in 2010 became just the third men’s lacrosse player in school history to receive national Academic All-America honors when he was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team. Galloway is also a fixture in the community. He has donated his time to the Salvation Army Christmas Bureau, the Central New York Burn Foundation, Meals on Wheels and other local philanthropic organizations.

On the field, Galloway is the reigning national goalkeeper of the year. He is currently tied for the most wins in NCAA history (51) and is 51-6 overall in 57 starts, including a perfect 7-0 record this season. Galloway owns a 7.09 goals-against average, which on pace to break his previous school-record mark of 7.16 set in 2010. He has 59 saves in seven games and sports a .551 save percentage.

CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. The program was launched during the 2001-02 season in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving early to turn professional. The award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg and was inspired by the story of former Duke star Shane Battier, who could have been an NBA lottery pick but elected to return to college where he led the Blue Devils to the national championship and earned his degree.

Former SU standout Mike Leveille won the award in 2008. Army's Andrew Maisano was last year's winner.
