Cornell is one step closer to an NCAA Title after downing Hartford

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) - David Lau had four goals and an assist,Tewaaraton Trophy finalist Rob Pannell had two goals and two assists, and Cornell beat Hartford 12-5 on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA men's lacrosse tournament.

Cornell's defense held Hartford (11-7) scoreless for a span of 41:55 after Hartford took an early lead. The second-seeded Big Red (14-2) surrendered three goals in the first 2:07 of play before settling down and will meet the winner of Sunday's Virginia-Bucknell game in the quarterfinals.

Hartford, making its first NCAA tournament appearance, got a strong performance from goalkeeper Scott Bement, who made 16 saves to keep the unseeded Hawks in the game. Carter Bender had a pair of scores and Tim Fallon won 11 of 21 faceoffs.

The Big Red held a decisive edge in shots (44-24) and ground balls (44-33) while forcing 22 Hartford turnovers.
