ROCHESTER -- The Syracuse Chiefs fell 10-4 to the Rochester Red Wings to end up with a split of the teams’ four-game series.  Rochester got the scoring going early with five first inning runs against starter Ross Detwiler and never trailed after that.  The loss was Syracuse’s second straight after a seven-game winning streak.

Rochester (18-25) strung together five consecutive hits in the first inning to plate five runs.  Matt Brown singled to center field with two runners on and Gregor Blanco’s error on the same play scored two runs.  Jeff Bailey and Toby Gardenhire then doubled in runs and Dustin Martin laced an RBI single to right field, making the score 5-0.

Jesus Valdez answered for Syracuse (19-24) in the third inning with a two-run home run, his first in Triple-A.  Valdez reached base four times with a home run, double, and two walks.  Rochester would answer back with a run on a Gardenhire single in the third and two runs on a Tug Hulett error in the fourth inning.  Detwiler’s day was cut short after three and two-thirds innings.  The lefthander allowed ten hits and eight runs, six earned.

A late Syracuse rally was cut short in the eighth inning.  Jhonatan Solano and Chris McConnell drove in runs to make the score 9-4, but Blanco grounded out with two runners on to end the threat.  Luke Hughes’ eighth-inning home run for Rochester provided the final tally.

Syracuse plays next on Thursday night, after a scheduled day off on Wednesday.  The Chiefs will battle the Charlotte Knights in the first of a four game series on Thursday night at 7:00.  Righthander Brad Meyers is scheduled to throw for Syracuse against Charlotte’s Jeff Marquez.
