Garrett Olson and Stephen Jackson dealt a two-hit gem for the Indianapolis Indians (42-40) as the Syracuse Chiefs (33-45), the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell 3-0 Thursday at Alliance Bank Stadium. Olson pitched seven two-hit innings, struck out five and walked three in his longest start of the year. Jackson entered in the eighth and didn’t give up a hit to earn the save. Syracuse lefty Ross Detwiler started the game for the Chiefs and dealt two hitless innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Righthander Brad Meyers then took over on the mound, but his teammates couldn’t give him any run support off Olson. Second baseman Steve Lombardozzi’s single in the first and Seth Bynum’s double to left in the fifth were the only hits Syracuse mustered all game. Four walks provided the only other baserunners for the Chiefs, who never advanced past second base on the night. While Olson shut down the Chiefs offense, the Indians finally broke the scoreless tie in the sixth. Brian Friday started the inning with a single to right and moved to second on a groundout from John Bowker. Matt Hague then grounded a single up the middle that brought Friday home to inch the Indians in front 1-0. Olson retired seven straight batters from the fifth to the seventh, and Indianapolis extended that one-run lead in the eighth. Friday again led off, this time with a walk, and stole second. Two batters later. Hague lobbed an RBI double to left-centerfield to put the score at 2-0. After a popout in the next at-bat for the second out, Miles Durham beat Meyers to first base on a grounder to first. And while the Chiefs just missed ending the inning with the forceout at first, Hague snuck home to give Indianapolis the 3-0 lead. Righthanded reliever Steven Jackson took over for Olson in the eighth. He continued the Indians dominance from the mound giving up just a walk and holding the Chiefs hitless over the last two innings. The Chiefs and Indians will meet for the final time this season Friday at 7:00 at Alliance Bank Stadium. Righty J.D. Martin will take the mound for Syracuse.
