Syracuse scored a 33-30 victory over the Toledo Rockets on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.
A win that according to Toledo officials is "an injustice".
They're saying that because of a late extra point by Syracuse that increased the Orange's lead to 30-27 with 2 minutes left in the game. The kick by sophomore Ross Krautman was ruled "good" on the field and then was sent to the replay booth for review. In the booth, the ruling on the field stood its ground and the point was upheld. If you look at the replay, the ball does appear, anyway, to have sailed wide to the left of the upright. That widespread opinion even prompted Big East officials to admit the call was wrong and apologize.
In light of all that, Toledo's Athletic Director and Head Coach Tim Beckman held a press conference today. "I requested today that our Mid American Conference Commissioner...that he contact the Big East conference relative to yesterday's U.T. vs. Syracuse game and ask that the win be vacated and awarded to the University of Toledo" O'Brien said.
"70 players made the trip to Syracuse and played extremely hard to be successful in the end. 70 players that take part in a Mid-American football program that takes pride in being built on honesty, integrity, and accountability" said Beckman.
He added "The game of football has numerous human errors throughtout a game. The players, coaches and officials are all a part of these, that's football. But when you add technology to a call and it is not used properly that is injustice".
It is highly unlikely that the Big East would force the Orange to vacate the victory. There were just too many "what-ifs" after that extra point and no doubt the Orange would've played differently defensively if two points were the margin rather than three. Of course, Syracuse isn't the Big East's favorite program at the moment so anything is possible, but again it's highly unlikely.
Dave Rahme of the Syracuse Post-Standard echoes those sentiments, and a Big East official said "no further action was planned".
