ES-M's Jacquell Cotton shows off the ball he recovered after a J-D fumble.
We're heading into the home stretch of the high school football season and teams are starting to make their push to the post season.
One of those teams is undefeated East Syracuse Minoa in Class A. The Spartans (5-0) routed Jamesville-Dewitt (4-1) 48-6 and in the process, clinched the Class A American championship. ES-M led 21-0 at the half thanks in part to an unconventional touchdown. Spartans' quarterback Tyler Johnson meant to toss the ball on a halfback sweep but fumbled it. However, he recovered and launched the ball into the end zone where a wide open Bobby Campese was waiting for a touchdown. ES-M's undefeated mark though is mirrored in Class A National by Whitesboro, who beat Watertown 40-15 for the Class A National crown.
In Class AA, CBA and West Genesee remained the class of the class by beating Central Square and Utica-Proctor respectively. Proctor challenged Genny, only trailing 39-27 in the 3rd but the Wildcats pulled away with two fourth quarter touchdowns for a convincing 53-27 victory.
The stage is also set in Class B for a showdown next Friday. Unbeaten Cazenovia is in action on Saturday against Ilion, and they play perfect Chittenango next Friday. The Bears beat Westhill in convincing fashion 45-14 to improve to 6-0 and along with the Lakers remain the top notch teams in Class B.
