An early second period goal from Brittany Phillips just 36 seconds into the frame sparked Colgate to a 3-1 win against the Syracuse ice hockey team (2-5-0) on Wednesday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Jessica Sorensen had the lone goal for the Orange, which will continue its five-game home stand on Friday against Union at 7:00 p.m.

SU held a 29-22 advantage in shots for the game, and won 33-of-54 faceoffs. The Orange was 1-of-5 power plays during the night, while Colgate was 1-for-3 on the man advantage. Freshman Julie Knerr was a bright spot for SU with five shots on goal and a 12-of-17 performance in the faceoff circle.

After playing a scoreless first period, the Raiders began the middle stanza on the power play with the Orange in the box for interference. Phillips, skating down the left side of the offensive zone, took a pass from Shannon Doyle and deposited it past Syracuse goaltender Kallie Billadeau (16 saves).

The score would remain that way until Taylor Volpe finished off a two-on-one play with Melissa Kueber with 3:54 left in the frame on a give-and-go before a wrist shot past Billadeau to make it 2-0 Raiders.

Syracuse battled during the third period in an effort to get back into the game, but Colgate extended its lead to 3-0 six minutes into the final stanza when Carolin Potolicchio hammered home a rebound off a Miriam Drubal shot past Stephanie Jones, who replaced Billadeau at the start of the period.

The Orange got on the board with a power play tally with 1:39 left in regulation on Sorensen's first goal of the season. With SU moving the puck around on the man advantage, Margot Scharfe's initial shot was stopped by Colgate goalie Kimberly Sass (28 saves), but Sorensen was there to put the rebound home for the score.
