The opening week of the high school basketball team did show us a lot about what we can expect in the winter of 2011-2012, schools such as Jamesville-Dewitt and Henninger look to have the potential to repeat as Class A and Class AA champions respectively.

Some other classes though are showing, as usual, a lot of parity.

Class C for instance features several capable teams including LaFayette and Fabius-Pompey. The two schools, that actually combine to form one football team, battled in a thriller on Monday night. F-P led the Lancers 34-24 at halftime before LaFayette stormed back to force overtime. After two grueling overtime sessions, the Falcons finally prevailed with a 72-71 hard fought win.

Another Class C game featured LaFayette's rival, Tully and Manlius Pebble Hill. Tully opened up a huge lead early and never turned back, including scoring a paltry 23 points in the fourth quarter to win 83-42. The Black Knights remain perfect on the season.

There was also a marquee matchup in Class AA where Auburn took care of business and topped perennial power Rush-Henrietta 72-71 in Auburn on Monday. Mike Granato scored 21 points and Kareef Rufus added 19 to improve the Maroons to 1-0 on the season.

In girls basketball, it was a rivalry renewed with Tully and LaFayette, Cassley Jackowski scored 15 points for the Lancers but Tully was able to win 38-25. Carrie Rapp led the way for the Knights with 11 points.

Bishop Grimes and Henninger battled to a very close first half, where the Cobras led 26-22, but Grimes ran away with it in the 2nd half, topping the Knights 69-40.

In volleyball, Kara Dell'uomo scored two aces in a row for CBA to clinch game one over Chittenango, and CBA never looked back winning 3 games to none. ES-M also topped Onondaga 3-1.
