Syracuse, NY (March 2, 2012) --The Syracuse Crunch fell, 5-2, to the Binghamton Senators in the sixth of eight meetings between the rivals tonight at the War Memorial Arena.

The Senators sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the first period. Binghamton opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Mike Hoffman at the 2:22 mark of the first. The Senators struck again with even-strength goals from Corey Locke at the 5:03 mark and Andre Petersson at the 7:07 mark. Hoffman added his second of the game with 1:35 to play in the period. The Senators four goals were enough to chase Antero Niittymaki from the game; he allowed four goals on 12 shots.

The Crunch showed some spark during the second period. Iiro Tarkki started the period in goal and the Crunch were able to cut the deficit in half thanks to goals from Patrick Maroon and Luca Caputi. Maroon scored his 26th goal of the season off a behind the net pass from Peter Holland. Less than a minute later Caputi beat Senators goalie Ben Bishop with a power-play goal assisted by Kyle Palmieri and Kyle Cumiskey.

The Senators extended their lead to 5-2 with a shot over Tarkki’s stick side by Pat Cannone at the 2:07 mark of the third. The remainder of the period was scoreless, and although the Crunch kept up the pressure, leading shots on goal 43-27 at the game’s conclusion, they fell to the Senators with a final score of 5 to 2.

The Crunch face the St. John’s IceCaps tomorrow night at the War Memorial at 7:30 p.m.

Crunchables: Cumiskey and Palmieri were alternate captains tonight...With his goal tonight, Patrick Maroon extended his career high in points to 56…Kyle Palmieri is on a 5 game point streak, the fifth time a Crunch player has recorded points in five straight games
