It was a busy Sunday afternoon for Olympians with Central New York ties. Former Syracuse basketball star Carmelo Anthony and current Orange head coach Jim Boeheim helped the US Men's Basketball beat the French National team 98-71. Anthony scored nine points and added nine rebounds in the Olympic opener for U.S.A.
Perhaps the biggest story of Sunday's Olympic action come in Swimming, where the Syracuse born Dana Vollmer took gold in the Women's 100 meter butterfly. Vollmer not only set an Olympic record with a time of 55.96 seconds, but also a world record. Vollmer will now look to lead the U.S. in the free relay starting on Wednesday August 1st. The finals are slated for Saturday August 4th.
Ithaca's Caryn Davies and Meghan Muscniki, who attended Ithaca college, helped the U.S. Women's Rowing team advance to the women's eights Final. The U.S. Women, who have not lost in six years, will look to continue their dominance Thursday in the Finals.
Former Syracuse University rower Natalie Masiracci will also compete on Thursday's, helping to advance Team Canada to the eights final.
Former Syracuse Field Hockey standout Shannon Taylor was unable to help the U.S. Women's Field Hockey Team upset the Germans, as they fell 2-1. The U.S. will look for redemption, as they take the field Tuesday against Australia. Taylor is the leading goal scorer on Team U.S.A.
