SYRACUSE -- While Syracuse Orange basketball fans were still busy celebrating Jim Boeheim's 900th career victory, a 72-68 win over Detroit at the Carrier Dome, the Hall of Fame head coach had other topics to discuss in his post game media conference.
After downplaying the significance of becoming only the third head coach in NCAA history to win 900 games, he unexpectedly gave his opinion about gun control in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that killed 20 children and 6 adults.
"If we in this country as Americans can not get the people who represent us to do something about firearms, we are a sad, sad society," said Boeheim.
"I'm a hunter, I've hunted, I'm not talking about rifles. If one person in the world, the NRA president, anybody, can tell me why we need assault weapons with 30 shots in the thing. This is my fault, your fault, all your faults if we don't get out there and do something about this," said Boeheim. "If we can't get this thing done, I don't know what kind of country we have. Because this is about us. This isn't about the president, or those other people down there, we've got to make them understand somehow that this needs to get figured out real quick, not six months from now."
