PROVIDENCE -- The Syracuse men’s lacrosse team continued on their winning ways as they defeated the Friars of Providence 18-9 tonight in Rhode Island. The Orange improved their record to 5-1. They were led by midfielder Henry Schoonmaker who scored a team-high three goals.
Providence tallied first in the game to go up 1-0, but Syracuse went on a six goal run to end the first quarter. The second quarter started out similar to the first quarter with Providence scoring first, but the Orange answered with another run. Attackmen Kevin Rice led Syracuse by burying two goals during their 5-0 run, which gave the Orange an 11-2 halftime lead.
The first half proved to be the difference maker for Syracuse as the Friars scored even with the Orange for the second half. Each squad netted seven goals apiece in the second half.
One of the big storylines of the game for the Orange was the goalie situation. Dominic Lamolinara got his first start of the season against Providence. Lamolinara came in to take over for Bobby Wardwell during the second half of Syracuse's 13-8 win over Johns Hopkins last Saturday. Lamolinara recored 11 saves and led the Orange to victory over the Friars.
Syracuse dominated early and often against the Friars as they capitalized on all of Providence’s mistakes, especially in the first half. As the second rolled on for the Orange, Coach Desko played a majority of his bench in the big win.
The Orange filled up the stat book as five players scoring 2 goals. Of the 18 goals scored, 12 were assisted for Syracuse.
Syracuse will try to keep their winning streak going as they travel to play Villanova on Saturday for another Big East test, face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
