This week's CNYCentral Athlete will be helping to lead his team to a Section III Championship on Saturday night. Quarterback Devin Phelps has been beyond versatile for the Chittenango Bears as they look to improve to a perfect 10-0 with a win over Cazenovia and a Section III Championship.
"He's a super player, " says Chittenango Head Coach Jack Hayes, " he has phenomenal athletic skills. He's almost one step ahead of everybody else out there. He can make some on field adjustments and just flat out make people miss him. So he's exciting to watch and coach."
"He's a warrior, " says Chittenango lineman Aaron Jones, " he's a great football player. He has a ton of heart, and he knows his football, and he gets it done."
Phelps threw for a touchdown and helped himself to 125 yards rushing on 16 carries in the Bears' semifinal win over Oneida, a game where he even managed an interception while playing defense. He says he paid attention to what the seniors were able to accomplish last year, and hopes to go out in style this season.
"(There's) definitely more butterflies this week," admits Phelps, "especially here playing in the Dome and everything. And I think really everybody is going to have to step it up this week."
