SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament is back with some new additions and superstars of the horse world. John Madden, the event's organizer and horse show manager, and his wife Beezie Madden, Olympic gold medalist, say this sixth year of the event is bigger and has more for horse lovers of all kinds.
Starting Wednesday and continuing through Sunday, there will be vendors and demonstrations, plus a chance to watch the competitors warm up in the Oncenter for free. There is also a full schedule of clinics and discussions, and competitors will sign autographs after the jumping sessions in the War Memorial.
On Halloween (Friday), vendors will offer free trick-or-treating from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, and one of the highlights is the costume class (horses and riders). Syracuse University men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim - himself a gold medalist - will introduce the U.S. Equestrian gold medal team and Canadian medalists as well.
This year there are 125 additional horses, not 'jumpers' but 'hunters', as the 125th edition of the National Horse Show, formerly at Madison Square Garden, is also staged in Syracuse.
