CORTLAND -- The 2009 High School Girls State Championship tournament begins this Friday at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex, Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) and Homer High School Stadium.
Twenty teams from across New York State will vie for state titles in five divisions. Hosted by the Cortland Regional Sports Council and Section III girls soccer, the event kicks off on Thursday November 19, with a banquet at SUNY Cortland’s Corey Union. First round action gets underway on Friday, with the championship games slated for Saturday.
“Our local hotels are completely booked with players, coaches, spectators and officials,” said Sports Council Executive Director Machell Phelps. “This is exactly the kind of event we want to draw to the Cortland community.”
The general public is encouraged to attend. There is an admission fee of $8.00.
Match ups include three teams from Section III - Christian Brothers Academy from Class AA, Sauquoit Valley in Class C and McGraw from Class D. McGraw will face Arkport on Friday in the semifinals at 9:30am in the SUNY Cortland Stadium – White field. Once again this year in the tournament field is Burnt Hills, the Class A Section II champion that advanced to the tournament over Section III champion Jamesville-DeWitt a week ago.
“We hope the community will welcome these athletes and spectators. Making it to a State Championship – in any sport – is quite an accomplishment. These participants will always remember their time in Cortland for this reason.” said Phelps.
