It's become a staple annually in the Central New York sports scene, the inductions into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. 2010 marked the 24th year the Hall has inducted a class, its members include the likes of Jim Boeheim, Gary Gait, John Desko, Jim Roy, Danny Schayes, Ray Rinaldi, Tim Green, Dick Macpherson, Mike Messere, Carmen Basilio and so many more. Truly honoring the best athletes our area has ever seen.
The 2010 class included William Dennis "Doc" Scanlan, Joan Partridge-Skiff, Nini Sgroi, Len Rauch, Chuck Bisesi, Frank Di Christina, and Larry Hart. The team inducted, is an active one, the 2006-2009 Fayetteville-Manlius Girls Cross Country team that has won four straight National Championships.
Chuck Bisesi is a legend in Parochial School basketball history, playing for St. Lucy's in the '50s and leading Bishop Cunningham of Oswego to a State Championship as a coach in 1985.
Frank DiChristina won more than 350 games while coaching Chittenango baseball an astonishing stretch from 1956-1997. The field at Chittenango is named in his honor.
Larry Hart was an incredible coach over the years at several different high schools and even Syracuse University. His combined coaching record in all sports he coached was 544-159-10.
Len Rauch was a baseball and basketball standout at Bishop Ludden and Le Moyne College. From 1991-2010 he held the all time Le Moyne College record for points and rebounds. He's still 2nd in those categories, and 3rd in field goals, 5th in assists and steals. While playing baseball for Le Moyne, the Dolphins were just one pitch away from making the mythical College World Series.
Anthony "Nini" Sgroi was an amazing bowler who held over a 200 average during a 10-year stretch of 1963-1972. In 1992 he was elected to the Syracuse Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
Joan Partridge Skiff's name was synonymous with skiing and golf for over 40 years. She made headlines with Sports Illustrated for winning 8 gold medals in 12 days during the U.S. Ski Association Alpine Masters Championship. By the way, she was 67 when she accomplished that feat. Joan passed away in 2008.
William Dennis "Doc" Scanlan was a native of Syracuse who posted fantastic numbers as a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers at the turn of the 20th century.
