Rory McIlroy was the undisputed king of the 2011 U.S. Open, but if you talk to anyone from Owasco Country Club in Auburn, chances are their highlight was having a chance to watch one of their own in his first ever U.S. Open. David May played extremely well in Thursday's first round, finishing at even par with a strong chance at making the weekend cut. But he ran into some trouble the next day, fighting through 7 bogeys and finishing at 5 over. And while missing the cut by just one stroke might have been disappointing at first, May was more than pleased with the overall experience.
"To be honest with you it was a great experience and I really enjoyed myself," says May, "I felt very comfortable out there and I just told myself you know I have worked towards this my whole life and go out there and by myself and do my best.It definitely worked out."
And getting a chance to practice and ultimately play beside some of the biggest names in golf has given the Auburn High School graduate a fresh perspective on his game and where it might be going fro here.
"Getting to know a lot of the guys that I played practice rounds with were very helpful towards me, and they had a lot of positive things to say to me and about my golf game which was nice to hear from guys like Lucas Glover and Stewart Cink. They were both very good to me. Since I decided to make it my profession I have been working really hard and its good to see that all the hard work has been paying off and to get to that level.
And while May didn't get a chance to play on the weekend, he was watching Rory McIlroy's record breaking 16 under par performance along with the rest of us.
"Its unbelievable I did not see that going into this week someone shooting 16 under par. Granted the course got a little wet and the scoring conditions got a little better, but still not even close to seeing someone shoot 16 under par. I think a lot of the older guys would say the exact same thing, and I would totally agree with them, it was pretty awesome."
