Making the playoffs is old hat for the CBA Brothers, but for the Central Square Redhawks, they haven't tasted the post-season since 2004.
But the suddenly resurgent Redhawks are a surprising 3-2 on the year, with a chance to tie CBA for the AA lead with just two weeks to play in our Toyota High School Game of the Week.
The Brothers got things off to a good start when Mike Vavonese ran for scores of 52 and 33 yards to put CBA up 12-0 in the first quarter.
Central Square QB Mitchell Jones got the Redhawks back in it with a 30 yard touchdown strike to Joey Battaglia to make it 12-6 early in the 2nd quarter.
But the Brothers ground game continued to churn out the yards and points. Three consecutive touchdown runs by three different runners put the game out of reach. The Brothers went on to win 48-12.
Mike Vavonese led CBA with 160 yards and 3 scores. Two other backs had 100 yard games, with Joey Pascarella and Deshawn Salter running for 117 and 114, respectively.
CBA Head Coach Joe Casamento was happy with the win, especially with the number of injuries his team has overcome.
"It was a nice win for our kids, we've got a lot of guys hurt." Casamento sats. "We've just got to get healthy. If we can get healthy we'll be all right."
"They're a tough team, they always are," Vavonese says. "Playing, coming out here on their senior night, so a lot of adversity. But going up big two scores in the first quarter, it's a big thing for us because we get the momentum rolling early."
The Brothers improve to 5-1 and clinch a first round home playoff game. Central Square drops to 3-3.
