West Genesee is coming off one of the most entertaining Section III Title game we've seen in a while, a 57-35 championship win over CBA. And while the excitement is still there, the Wildcats have put that celebration behind them for now, as they prepare for State Regionals. The now 10-0 Wildcats will take on Binghamton out of Section IV on Friday night in Vestal, the winner moving on to the State semifinals.
"to my surprise the guys have come out and been focussed all week," says Head Coach Joe Corley, "I kind of expected them to be a little loose and a little bit out of control, but they want more of the pie for sure."
"We won a Section Championship that's been our goal all year," says senior Adam Wierbinski, "but now we have to move on and focus on our next game. Hopefully to keep it coming and keep it going and maybe bring home a state Championship, that would be fun."
West Genesee is hoping to keep producing big plays, just as they did against CBA. Brothers Sean and Naesean Howard were the stars of that Section III Title game with 3 touchdowns each, but it's been the seniors who have been keeping the Wildcats focussed.
"We have to come out with the same intensity as we have all year, says Matt Naton, "(us seniors have) been making people focus all year, but especially this week and last week too, it's just been crazy."
And if it's been the senior who have been leading the team, it's the entire student body of West Genesee high school who have been pushing them to succeed.
"They're making T-shirts for us," says Wierbinski, "everyone is happy in the hallway giving us high fives and stuff it's just been fun, a great atmosphere for a football team".
