Syracuse, NY (November 25, 2011) – Nick Bonino registered three points as the Syracuse Crunch defeated the defending Calder Cup Champion Binghamton Senators 4-1 tonight at the War Memorial at Oncenter.
The Crunch got off to an early 1-0 lead by capitalizing on their first power play opportunity less than two minutes into the first period. Mathieu Carle’s power-play tally added to a Crunch power play unit that came into tonight’s contest ranked second in the AHL with a 28% conversion rate.
The Crunch went into the first intermission up 2-0 thanks to a Bonino goal with 11:24 remaining in the first frame. Bonino ripped a feed from Dan Sexton over the shoulder of Binghamton goaltender Robin Lehner.
“We’re getting contributions from every line,” said Bonino. “That’s one of the main reasons we’ve put up 11 goals in the last two games. If we score four or more goals a game, we are probably going to win most games.”
The Crunch continued to roll when five minutes into the second stanza J.F. Jacques extended the Crunch’s lead to 3-0. Jacques’ goal, his sixth of the season, was assisted by Bonino and Sexton.
Bonino made it 4-0 with his second goal of the game, 8:50 into the second period. Bonino snuck the puck past Lehner with a low shot from the side of the net. Patrick Maroon and Carle picked up assists on the play.
Binghamton’s defenseman Craig Schira got the Senators on the board with 2:57 remaining in the second stanza. Schira’s goal would be the only shot to get past Crunch netminder Iiro Tarkki who went on to total 25 saves.
Jacques had the opportunity to put the Crunch ahead by four in the third period when he was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked by Mike Hoffman on a breakaway, but was unable to convert.
With no goals in the third period, the Crunch secured their second consecutive win to bring their overall record to 8-6-2-1.
