BOISE, Idaho – Senior Iasia Hemingway (Newark, N.J.) scored a career-high 30 points to lead the --/RV Syracuse women’s basketball team to a 70-47 victory at Boise State on Tuesday, November 29. The Orange improves to 6-0 and posts an undefeated record in the month of November for the third consecutive year. With the loss, the Broncos go to 4-3 on the season.
Hemingway was 11-for-16 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the free throw line as she becomes the second member of the Orange to score 30 points in a game this season. Junior Kayla Alexander (Milton, Ontario) joined Hemingway in double figures in scoring with 17 points. Junior Carmen Tyson-Thomas (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Shakeya Leary (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Syracuse in rebounds with 10 each, helping the Orange to a 57-26 advantage on the boards.
Boise State jumped out to a 6-5 lead before Syracuse went on a 10-2 scoring run to take a 15-9 lead with 12:20 on the clock. The Broncos scored four consecutive points to cut the lead to 15-13 with 6:30 to play in the first half. With the Orange leading 21-18, two free throws by Alexander sparked Syracuse on a 10-2 scoring run to give SU a 31-18 lead at intermission. Hemingway and Tyson-Thomas each had four points during the run.
Syracuse picked up where it left off at the start of the second half, outscoring Boise State 7-2 to increase its advantage to 38-22 with 17:40 to play. Alexander and Hemingway combined for all seven points during the run, which was capped by Alexander’s three-point play. The Orange continued to build on it lead in large part because of Hemingway’s play. She scored 19 of Syracuse’s 39 second-half points.
The Orange continues its four-game road swing on Friday when it takes on Arizona at 9 p.m. at the Hukilau Invitational in Laie, Hawaii.
