Syracuse, NY- The Syracuse Chiefs announced on Monday that Cicero-North Syracuse High School senior and future UConn Huskie Breanna Stewart will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day this coming Thursday. Stewart led the Northstars to a Class AA state championship this past season, capping her five-year high school career with a Section III record 2,367 points.
The 6' 4" Stewart was named the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year last month, and also recently won the Naismith High School Player of the Year Award, the Morgan Wooten Player of the Year Award, and was selected as USA Basketball's Female Athlete of the Year. Last week Stewart was also the MVP of the McDonald's All-American Game after making national headlines with her alley-oop dunks in the McDonald's All-American Game Jam Fest.
"We are very excited that Breanna Stewart will throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the 2012 season," says Chiefs G.M. John Simone. "This will be a unique opportunity for the sports fans of Central New York to recognize Breanna for the many accolades she has received."
The Chiefs will begin their 2012 season by hosting the Rochester Red Wings at 2 PM on Thursday following Stewart's opening pitch.
