To say it was a banner day for Onondaga Community College would be an understatement.
The Lazers men and womens lacrosse teams both captured national titles on Sunday, continuing a dominant run among the junior college ranks.
The womens team won in dramatic fashion. In an absolute battle with arch rival Monroe Community College, OCC rallied to tie the game up at 5 with under three minutes to play when West Genesee graduate Morgan Corso scored a goal. Corso, a sophomore at OCC, delivered the Lazers to the title with her timely goal with three seconds left.
It's the second championship in just four years of existence for OCC womens lacrosse, and the first since 2009.
The mens lacrosse team's victory wasn't nearly as dramatic, but was just as impressive. The Lazers took out Nassau Community College 15-6. The 9-goal victory marked the closest game all year for the unbeaten Lazers who won their fourth consecutive national crown. Not only has OCC won four straight, but they've captured the national title in 6 out of the last 7 years (2006,2007,2009,2010, 2011, and 2012). The last two seasons have been unblemished for Chuck Wilbur's bunch who continues to cement themselves as a Junior College dynasty.
So that makes it 2-for-2 for Central New York Lacrosse, and hopes for a title sweep are still alive. In Division III, both the SUNY Cortland men and womens teams are in the "Final Four". The same can be said in Division II for the Le Moyne men and womens squads. In Division I, the Syracuse University womens lacrosse team beat Dartmouth on Sunday, and now plays North Carolina this coming weekend for the right to advance to the Final Four. In Division I mens lacrosse, Colgate meets Duke for a chance at the Final Four.
