LONDON -- Ithaca native Alex Mayer finished in 10th place today in the 10K open-water swim at the London Olympics.

Ous Mellouli, of Tunisia, seemed to set the pace from the beginning, taking the gold with a time of 1 hour, 49 minutes and 55.1 seconds.

Meyer finished with a time of 1:50:48.2, and told ESPN that he was recovering from the early pace established by Mellouli and the other leaders.

"I don't think I ever really recovered,'' Meyer said. "Probably could have done a better job of keeping my head up going into that one, not running into people and getting to my feet quicker.
It was an emotional race for Mayer, who was swimming in honor Fran Crippen, his friend and teammate who lost his life in the waters almost two years ago.
