LAFAYETTE -- Every Thursday we honor an exemplary athlete as our Dunkin' Donuts Action News Athlete. This week, we’re doing something a little different. We’re honoring an entire team as our Action News Athletes.

The Lafayette Boys Basketball team is raising awareness for cancer research by wearing pink jerseys for all of its road games this season. A very noble cause that has close meaning to the team. Several players have close relatives or friends that have been stricken by the disease, and the Lancers decided to honor those brave people for the entire season.

The gesture has been met with respect from opponents all season long, including at Weedsport. When the Lancers headed west to take on the Warriors, initially some fans began to jeer the team for wearing pink. But after the public address announcer told the crowd why Lafayette was wearing the color, the entire crowd stood up and gave the Lancers a standing ovation.

Truly, the cause is a noble one, and this group of high schoolers is showing maturity beyond their teenage years. They have given up the school-spirited green and gold Lafayette is known for, and are showing their true colors and supporting a great cause.

Congratulations to the Lafayette Boys Basketball team for making the entire community proud.
