UTICA -- Tully was able to spoil a late push by Westmoreland to win the Section III Class C-1 championship Friday night by the score of 42-37 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Tully went into halftime with a comfortable 13 point lead, and in the third quarter saw that lead increase to 17 points.
But Westmoreland was able to make a huge run into the fourth quarter, thanks in part to 15 points from junior Jason Colburn. However, Westmoreland would never get the lead. With Tully up one with just over 30 seconds left, Tyler Reddington picked a great time to hit his only shot of the night and maybe the shot of his life. Reddington drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key to give Tully a four point lead and put the game out of reach. Tully would go on to win 42-37.
Tully was lead by senior Ben Hughes, who had 15 points. They finished sectional play with a record of 20-1 and will move onto state play next week.
In the Section III C-2 championship game it was Watertown IHC just missing a last second three-pointer in overtime that would have won the game. West Canada instead is moving on to the state playoffs with a thrilling 67-65 victory.
Jared Suderley led the winning team with 35 points, while Brian Magovney capped off an incredible career with 18 points and four three-pointers in a losing cause. He finishes his basketball career at Watertown IHC with 197 three-pointers.
