The SU Football team picked up a couple huge verbal commitments over the weekend from a pair of New York State prospects. The one getting the most attention is Rochester Quarterback Ashton Broyld who led Rush-Henrietta to the Class AA State Championship.

Broyld stands 6'4" and checks in at 225 lbs but has running back speed and a good arm to boot (click the video player to see that. He had offers from Rutgers, Louisville, and Akron among others, but in the end chose the Orange for a number of reasons.

"You know it's a great opportunity for me and my family, you know, we just thank God that I have I'm able to have a scholarship offer from Syracuse and hopefully I'l end up the right place, position. Hopefully everything works out for me." Broyld told me on Saturday.

Broyld has been offered the opportunity to play quarterback, but insists that doesn't matter he just wants to help out the team. "It kinda helps my pride a little bit (the opportunity to play quarterback" but if it doesn't work I'll find a position because I just want to play football" he said.

In the end though, a chance to play for the de-facto home college team in Rochester was just too good of an opportunity to pass up. It's a rebuilding program, and I want to be a part of a program that is building towards somethng, not a team that is already there and has everything and Syracuse offers a great education".

Broyld will take on "official visit" to SU on January 14th, and joins Terrel Hunt as quarterbacks in the fold for the 2011 SU Football recruiting class.

SU also received help at linebacker when Junior-College All-American Siriki Diabate pledged his services to the Orange. Here's Ryan Murray's story.

What do you think of the commitment, does Broyld see the field next year?
