No question, the Henninger community has undergone enormous amounts of sorrow over the past 18 months. There was the passing of former basketball coach and administrator Joe Mazella. Then this past fall, there was the untimely death of former basketball star Kihary Blue.
It was about time the basketball family had reason to celebrate.
The Black Knights beat Liverpool on Tuesday night 74-59, and in the process won a league title finishing with a 10-0 record in league play. Fittingly, Henninger was led in scoring by Blue's good friend Tevin Chisholm who scored 21 points. As a tribute to Blue, before the season, Chisholm earned permission from Head Coach Erik Saroney to wear Blue's former number (#4). No doubt, Henninger is a talented bunch that could go very far in the Sectional and State playoffs, but one has to believe their fallen teammate is with them as they attempt to win a Section III title for the first time since Blue and Ben Cronin helped the Knights earn that right in 2008.
Elsewhere in high school hoops, it was a nailbiter but Nottingham kept hopes alive with a 54-53 win over Baldwinsville. Cameron Isaac paced the Bulldogs with 13 points. Corcoran's hopes may have already been dashed, but that didn't stop the Cougars from making a statement with a 72-46 win over Oswego.
