Broyld, Smallwood not on campus for SU Football

SU Football's Summer Start program gets going this week and there were two notable freshman missing from those arriving on campus.

Rochester quarterback Ashton Broyld and running back Tyree Smallwood from downstate NY both did not report. SU Head Coach Doug Marrone told the Post-Standard that "neither player is likely to be a part of the team this fall".

Marrone couldn't comment on why each player didn't report, citing confidentiality rules.

It's widely rumored academics could be the culprit here, especially after Broyld was still by all accounts on his way to SU even despite a public lewdness charge against him, which he later pleaded guilty to.

Broyld tells our sister-station WROC-TV in Rochester that he won't comment on the situation, but he will play football at Syracuse, he's just not sure when.

Broyld is a multi-faceted quarterback, who likely will head to prep school in the fall, it's unclear what Smallwood's plans are, after the talented running back chose SU over Maryland, Rutgers and several other schools.
