The East Syracuse Minoa Spartans accomplished a historic night in the history of that school's athletic department.

The Spartans' Soccer team emerged triumphant in an overtime contest with Fulton 1-0 to capture the Boys Class A Section III Soccer Championship. The game was scoreless throughout thanks to great play in net by ES-M goalie Casey Sullivan and Fulton netminder Tyler French. Three minutes into the overtime session Nick Capriotti found Jeremy Barbuto who sent home the game winning goal, delivering the 5th seeded Spartans to the promised land. With the win, not only did the team capture the sectional crown, but it also earned Coach Mark Carr his 100th career victory.

Later in the evening, at the Carrier Dome, the ES-M football team found itself in an early defensive struggle with top-seeded Whitesboro. The Spartans got on the scoreboard first with 36 seconds left in the first half, and never looked back, roaring to a 27-0 win over the two-time defending Class A Champions. Jeffrey McDuffie scored two touchdowns, recovered a fumble, and rushed for 74 yards in the victory. It's ES-M's first Section III title since 2006.

In Class D, Westmoreland captured its 5th Section III title in the last 7 years, beating Dolgeville 20-7.

It was also a special night for some other schools in the area.

Jamesville-Dewittt girls soccer, the reigning CNY Central Athletes for this week, continued its dominance over the competition in 2011, capturing the Class A title with a 3-0 win over Whitesboro. Tessa Devereaux broke a scoreless tie with under two minutes to play in the first half and the Red Rams never looked back.
