Here in Central New York we see more snow than most everywhere else in the country. But have you ever seen snow flakes like this? Weather you’re a science geek, weather fanatic or simply a nature lover, you’ll want to check out this website I stumbled upon last night, SnowCrystals.com.
The website is all about one thing, and that being snow. It talks about how snowflakes are created, how frost is different, what you can do with snow and where you can go to see it. Just for fun I clicked on the snowflake hot spots tab on the website to see if Central New York was paid its respect. Sure enough there was a map of annual snowfall totals for the United States and the Tug Hill stuck out like a sore thumb. Outside of the huge mountain ranges out west, some of the best viewing is right here in our backyard. But of course, you already new that.
One of the most unique and interesting sections of the website is the photo galleries. They show super zoomed in images of snowflakes using chilled magnifying lenses. The results are amazing detail in the snow crystals that form a single flake. You can find a direct link to the gallery on SnowCrystals.com here.
So far this year the snow business has been unusually snow for our area. With only a trace of snow being reported so far in Syracuse we are over 5” below average to this date in the season. The long range forecast calls for a pattern change around Thanksgiving that might bring snow back on track to the region.
I remember once taking a picture in my parents’ garage of the window frosted over in a really cool crystal pattern. Boy did I love that one. Do you have any cool, close up pictures of snow you’ve taken? Show them to me and all of Central New York by easily uploading them to our website at MyCNYcentral.com
