My dog Bentley led the way to the end of the driveway as he does every morning. While he did his business, I did what I always do in the morning.  Reach into the mailbox for the newspaper.  Or, at least I started to reach before remembering the paper wasn't coming anymore.   The Post-Standard had been part of the daily fabric of our community for a century and a half.

We are creatures of habit.  This one has been engrained for generations.  We can hear all the explanations in the world about the move to the digital age.  We can talk about people getting their news via tablets and smartphones.  If you're under a certain age that is all you will ever know.  But, if you're over a certain age it does feel like a loss.

The Syracuse Media Group is still using its expensive state of the art printing press to toss together a light weight tabloid style paper on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.  You have to go seek it out somewhere. It doesn't come to your home. It doesn't have a daily Editorial.  It does have instructions on how to get your news online instead.

Of course, I recommend you get your news on television and on our CNYCentral.com website and through our mobile app.  But, the paper and it's staff of experienced reporters was such a critical piece of understanding and learning about our community.   Change is tough.

Just ask my friend's dog who unlike Bentley goes out for the paper himself.  His family is now hoping they can train him to only search for the paper when it's delivered on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
