SYRACUSE -- Chances are you were a little sleepy heading to work this morning, and not from staying up to watch the Bills-Titans or the Yankees-Red Sox games. A line of thunderstorms swept through the area late last night and early this morning interrupting the sleep of thousands with a spectacular lightning show and heavy downpours. The storms did cause some power outages around the area. At this point there are still around 2,192 (updated number) customers without power in Onondaga County, and 359 in the dark in Cortland County, according to National Grid's web site.  There were also scattered reports of roads flooding from the sudden surge of rain, that proved too much for some storm drains.

More storms are on the way, here's our weather page for more details.

Earlier yesterday, storms in the Southern Tier  washed out the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen. NASCAR hopes to get the race in today with the green flag scheduled to drop at noon. Meteorologist Matt Stevens says there is a chance of thunderstorms there today. He says the chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Meanwhile, to the west of us, the Associated Press is reporting:

A man died after being swept away by flood waters as thunderstorms hit this western New York community and knocked out power to thousands across the region, authorities said Monday.

One of the worst-hit areas was the village Gowanda, 30 miles south of Buffalo.

Gowanda disaster coordinator Nick Crassi said that a man died after being swept away late Sunday night when the creek in front of his home overflowed its banks after severe thunderstorms tore through the area earlier in the day.

"There's a bridge in front of his house that was swept away," Crassi said. "We don't know if he was on it at the time or checking it out."

The man's name hasn't been released. Crassi said another man died of an apparent heart attack after flooding prevented emergency crews from reaching him.

Cattaraugus County emergency officials issued a ban on unnecessary travel in the Gowanda area, where many streets were under water Monday morning. Authorities said the storms knocked down trees and power lines and washed out some rural roads.

Severe flooding was also reported in Silver Creek in neighboring Chautauqua County.

The storms knocked out power Sunday to more than 20,000 utility customers in western New York. More than half remained without power Monday morning.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for a large section of western New York, including parts of Genesee, Niagara and Orleans counties. Forecasters said more storms could dump an additional 1 to 2 inches in the region Monday.
