More snow, then wintry mix Sunday into Monday
Buried under mounds of snow and digging out for days. That's how many of us would describe the last few days, and more is yet to come.
It probably wouldn't surprise you to hear that we're counting the snow in feet now, not inches anymore. What started off as a slow winter season has kicked into high gear, with some spots in the Syracuse area getting up to 47 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Remember the snow deficit we were experiencing in November without a trace of snow until just recently?
Dozens of schools across the area are closed today. Afternoon and evening activities are already being cancelled. Click here for a link to school closings, cancellations and delays.
Parts of Central New York are still getting walloped by winter weather. It seems the lake effect just won't let up. And it isn't over yet. Another 6 to as much as 12 inches (yes another foot) of snow is expected to fall by tomorrow. But first, we'll have several more inches pile up this afternoon. And if you think Mother Nature is done with us, think again.
There's another system brewing out west that will affect a good chunk of the country this weekend and into early next week. Here's the latest from Meteorologist Peter Hall:
The system will start in a weakened form over the Midwest and produce some snow from about Iowa to Chicago and St. Louis on Saturday. There will likely be thunderstorms from Mississippi to Tennessee. Light snow will be likely from Illinois to New York state Saturday night with rain from New York City down to the South. On Sunday, expect a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain and rain across Upstate New York. It will be snowing over Ohio and the Tennessee Valley Sunday with rain from roughly Eastern Pennsylvania down to Florida. Sunday night and Monday, expect snow and wind for much of Upstate New York.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We've still got several inches of snow to get through tonight. Oh yeah and another 6 to 12 inches tomorrow. Good news for ski lovers and snow enthusiasts.
The funny thing about lake effect (those of you who have lived here for any amount of time know this), is that it can be very localized. Where it hits, it can hit hard. And while lake effect snow continues to pound some spots, leaving many of us buried, others aren't seeing much.
