Last time, the blizzard of 1993 occurred 4 days later!

Get set for something that has only happened 4 times since 1955 in the world. It’s called a “super full moon.” In fact, this particular one is a super perigee full moon. Full moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the moon’s orbit. It is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000km closer to Earth than the other (apogee). Perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the moons that occur on the apogee side of the moon’s orbit.

What makes this full moon different?
Perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the moons that occur on the apogee side of the moon’s orbit. Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory in Washington DC says, "The full Moon of March 19th occurs less than one hour away from perigee--a near-perfect coincidence1 that happens only 18 years or so," adds Chester.

What affect does this have?
Tides are affected by moon phases. However, according to the NOAA, there should be little effect worse than a few inches or so on local tides.  There is a neat video from youtube that you can view here that explains what a super full moon is and what it can do. However, there are some people that think full moons and super full moons can cause havoc and chaos.  According to multiple sources, the moon cannot directly cause earthquakes or other natural disasters. You can find different sites here, here, and here.

The last 4 super full moons were in 1955, 1974, 1993, and 2005. As mentioned above, the last time the full moon was this close to the perigee was in 1993.

When can I see the super full moon?
The best time to view the full moon will be at moonrise because the moon appears bigger at the horizon. Since skies should clear through the day, we should be able to see the moon rise this evening. In Syracuse and Watertown, the moon rises at 7:38pm. In Utica, the moon rises at 7:34pm. In Geneva, the moon rises at 7:41am. Click here to enter your city to find your exact moon rise.

The exact date of that super full perigee moon was March 8th, 1993. Do you remember what happened 4 days later? The “storm of the century: The blizzard of 1993 on March 12th-14th. Was this coincidence?  Probably. But, just in case, I will be keeping an eye out on the weather pattern coming up for any extreme weather across the country.

Judging just from that picture on this web page of the orange full moon near moonrise, perhaps this super full moon is a good omen. Maybe, theSyracuse Orangemen will win the 2011 NCAA National Championship!  Tell me your thoughts about all of this with a comment on the bottom of the web page.
