While the sky doesn’t look very promising tonight, if you do happen to catch a glimpse of the full moon tonight, you’ll have to address it by its proper name. This full moon is commonly referred to in folklore as the “Flower Moon.” This name is derived from northern spring flowers, which are blooming in abundance during May. Here’s a great panoramic image of the “Flower Moon” over Stockholm, Sweden from earlier this evening. See that halo around the moon? That’s a moon halo, caused by the ice crystals in high thin cirrus clouds. The brighter the light from the moon, the brighter the halo.
So even though our prospects for good moon-viewing aren’t all that great tonight, if you happen to be outside anytime before 4:43 AM Tuesday morning (when the moon sets), take a glance upwards. You may just catch a very unique full moon.
Don’t forget, you can use our Interactive Doppler Radar to track not only rain, but also clouds, so you can figure out if good viewing conditions are heading your way.
