Governor Andrew Cuomo warns New Yorkers to be prepared for storm.
The potential for severe weather across New York State on Thursday led to the governor issuing a rare warning the day ahead of the storm alerting the public to be ready.
The National Weather Service briefed Governor Andrew Cuomo and his administration about the possibility of rains, high winds, possible tornadoes and power outages.
Cuomo's previously scheduled events in Rochester and Syracuse were postponed because of the severe weather conditions. He will be in New York City managing storm preparations and response, according to a release from the Governor's Office.
The State Emergency Operations Center will be opened at 1:00 pm Thursday. CNY Central meteorologists say areas across the entire state could be hit as severe weather moves from west to east throughout the day.
The State Office of Emergency Management is encouraging people to be prepared for power outages. The governor also encourages everyone to pay close attention to local meteorologists for warnings, watches and alerts.
CNYcentral.com will have updates throughout the morning and all day. Also, CNY Central meteorologists will be broadcasting any severe weather information immediately on NBC3 and CBS5.
“The Red Cross encourages all members of our community to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety during a thunderstorm,” said John Buttrill, CEO of the Finger Lakes NY Region of the American Red Cross in a email release. “With hail, lightning, and even tornadoes possible, there’s no such thing as being too cautious.”
