ONONDAGA COUNTY -- Health officials say they are alarmed after an 'extraodinary' threefold rise in gonorrhea cases in Onondaga County.

The health department says there are 602 confirmed cases of gonorrhea through the first nine months of 2012. Through the first nine months of 2011, there were just 253 confirmed cases. Officials say the cases are in the 13202 and 13205 zip codes, located in parts of downtown Syracuse and Syracuse's south side.

An estimated 700,000 cases are reported each year, meaning gonorrhea is common, but health officials say Central New York's massive increase in cases in alarming.
