SYRACUSE (AP) -- A New York City man has been sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to repay seven banks nearly $300,000 he stole from them in a credit card scam.

The U.S. District Attorney's office in Syracuse announced Tuesday that 24-year-old Paul Hill of Brooklyn had admitted he illegally obtained other people's credit and debit card account numbers over the Internet, then used the information to convert gift cars into counterfeit credit or debit cards.

He would then mail the counterfeit cards to an accomplice in Syracuse, Andre Greaves.

Greaves then used the bogus cards purchase gift cards and sent some of them to Hill in Brooklyn.

Greaves pleaded guilty last March. He was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay the same restitution as Hill.
