CORTLAND -- A small explosion blew off a manhole cover underneath a SUNY Cortland residence hall Monday afternoon.

Cortland County 911 says there was a small ‘underground explosion’ at a residence hall on the SUNY Cortland campus Monday afternoon. The university says the explosion blew off a manhole cover.

SUNY Cortland says workers were having electrical problems at Clark Hall all day. They say there was an evacuation of Clark Hall after the reported explosion.

SUNY Cortland says they do not know the extent of the damage but it appears limited and confined to the basement. Some bricks were damaged.

They say no residences were damaged and no one was injured.

The university says the explosion knocked out power to nine campus buildings. Power was restored to eight of the nine SUNY Cortland buildings affected by early Tuesday morning.

Clark Hall was still without power on Tuesday morning and an electrical contractor was on site continuing to work . Students from Clark Hall spent Monday night at local hotels at the College's expense.

All classes and operations, including the Child Care Center, are scheduled to proceed as normal on Tuesday.
